The Face of Exeter

22 Apr

Last night was very exciting. Urban Outfitters came to Exeter Phoenix to show us their plans for a new shop on Gandy Street. As a teen I can remember getting the train up to London, specifically to go to Urban Outfitters – so the prospect of having them at the end of the road is a very wallet-emptying-thought.

Urban Outfitters set up a space in the Black Box at Exeter Phoenix, complete with bespoke vinyl floor to present their idea.

What is so enchanting is that, unlike other shops, they have spent time researching the building, they always open up the windows of the shop & they create each shop interior to reflect the building. This sort of integrity is uncommon.

On top of this: Urban Outfitters plan to commission a piece of public art, artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils carves into the wall to create a sculptural installation, he will be selecting a local face which complements the process. Vhils said, “I haven’t found a face yet, I will spend two weeks here.” Rumor has it that he’ll be back in August to research the face of Exeter. “An Exeter citizen becomes immortalized”, summed up the Creative Director of Urban Outfitters.
